About the game

Territory is a free browser-based online turn-based multiplayer strategy game with a simple concept and simple rules (simpler than that sentence). It has been solely developed by me.

Read the tutorial to get started, or read the manual for more in-depth information. Also make sure you have read the rules of the game.

Contact an administrator for assistance, or file a bug report if there is an issue with the game's mechanics. For more general discussion, you can send me (maestro) an in-game message, or send an email to maestro at gmail dot com. Suggestions are more than welcome.

You can talk to other players, including me, at the Territory IRC channel, #territory on irc.waypasteleven.com. Individual results may vary, but you should be able find people in there, especially if there's a turn coming soon.

About the website

Development

Territory is programmed in PHP, using the ConTEXT text editor. Offline testing is conducted using WAMP5, an Apache 1.3 & PHP 5 & MySQL 4 package for Microsoft Windows. The graphics were created using Adobe Photoshop CS2. The title image uses the font Communist, by Shamrock.

The project began on the 10th of November, 2006, with a concept of a game that "is all about having territory; the more you have, the better you are (and the more your parents love you)". It is now a world-wide sensation that consists of around 230 kilobytes of code (and a few grams of salt).

Display

Territory is playable using most modern browsers, and has been tested under Mozilla Firefox 2.0, Opera 9.02 (both browsers handle it excellently), and Internet Explorer 6. It doesn't work well in Internet Explorer 6, so I recommend you don't use it; I imagine it works and works better with Internet Explorer 7, but I haven't tested that because IE7 will not let me conduct local testing. The game will not work properly if your browser does not support transparent PNGs—Internet Explorer 6 and down do not support them, but Internet Explorer 7 does.

I generally try to adhere to the W3C standards, but the more complex pages might not validate. For example (most people can tune out for the rest of this sentence), you are supposed to define an alt attribute for all img elements, but on the maps I have not because it would have a detrimental effect on loading time and bandwidth usage, and because it would not provide any accessibility benefit (either way, the game is scarcely playable if you cannot see images).

Bugs

Territory is currently in beta. There are bound to be some bugs in it, and many things will continue to change, so please file a bug report if you encounter anything not working properly.
